Day 7 | Advent Calendar

If only by Eric Klingenberg

If only

If only Christmas was less about producing the perfect day and more about relaxing and being yourself.

If only Christmas was less about giving and receiving things and more about giving time.

If only Christmas were less about a baby born 2000 years ago, and more about helping others now.

If only Christmas was less about competing with your neighbours to who can have the most garish decoration and more about helping your neighbour.

If only Christmas was less about excessive eating and drinking and more about, oh no hang on I quiet like that bit.

    gosh! what a mixture of chocolate, marzipan, sweetmeat, pious thinking and bigotry here! this is the kind o things that make me angry.

    If there were less about that 2000 year old baby, there would be no Christmas, no pretending about helping others ; now;

    Now is everyday for most people in need. It is not that unctuous smile of people going to or coming fom the midnight mass that is needed. One needs to eat everyday, to be clothed, fed, heated, being given something to drink, to be held stand up – and this every day: on Christmas, one would like a present – like the others.

    Three years ago, The Girls and I (The Little Family of my two DownS Girls – wards – and myself) had nothing to eat but macaroni – dry pasta; no butter, no cheese, no sauce. I told the people in charge of our RC community in the country that I was desperate for the Girls. The priest answered that Jesus was born poor and that we should be grateful to be chosen to share this poverty; and then wished us a happy Christmas and Happy Holy Family Day.

    There are days where good breeding saves lives – unknown.

    This year, my Elder Girl (who is 57) has been having epilepsy seizures in August. This goes frequently with the ageing of the brain of DownS persons. It is spectacular and scaring. She had a second seizure at the beginning of October and we were able to have her definitely diagnosed epileptic with a treatment to give her. Neverthelesss, she is deteriorating. She has hallucinations and delusions. She does not know where she is in the house. It was so hard, that I broke down in front of the doctor, was diagnosed burntout. The Girs are in the nearby cottage hopital and I am hospitalized at home (a week alone to sleep). I go, see them, talk, discuss and they shall make tea with fruitcake for the other penshioners of their part/corridor.
    I have organised a great cleaning out of the house while they are away. Everything has to bE ready for the 16 December when they come back put their last touches to the Xmas preparations.
    .
    This is our present. Our baby born 2000 years ago to whom we think and pray everyday. But there are the helpers who made this Advent time decent at last.
    And it would be so great to have not only to eat on the 25 but also a gift to open. A wink towards some friends here and a smile … 🙂
