C is for Chatwin – A to Z Challenge April 2015

What a shame that Bruce Chatwin died so young, at the age of 48. Everyone who has a Moleskin notebook has read his name in there, he seems to be one of the more prominent Moleskin users that have existed. I do not recall if I discovered Chatwin through the Moleskin or the Moleskine through Chatwin.

Bruce Chatwin was a travel writer, but his writings are less than typical. They are not a tourist’s guide to a place, no they are marked by the mixture of fiction, non fiction, history, geography and his own experiences. Chatwin’s style makes the reader feel as if they have been, present at the family reunion in Africa, or to Utz’ porcelain collection in Prague.

For a long time I have been on and off reading the book Under the Sun, which is actually a collection of Chatwin’s letters. This is I believe the only Chatwin book that I have not finished yet. I can recommend all of his books, I do not think that I have a favourite, maybe Songlines. But one thing is sure, Bruce Chatwin is definitely one of my favourite authors, maybe he is my favourite.
