Blogging or the Lack Thereof in the 1st Quater of 2016

BloggingNow, that it is April, it is time for another one of my stats posts. I like to do these on a quarterly basis, to look at my blogs progression, not too much to compare myself to others, no, to compare my blog to itself.

With the Advent Calendar in December 2015, last year finished on a high note stats wise, you can read more on it here. I had a total of 2 189 views (it says 2188 in the post, so I guess the stats page was not 100% up to date back then) for December, my blog has since then not had so many monthly views… But the year is still young, and as I had been on quite a long blogging break, due to my mom’s bad health and passing away. Here you can have an idea of how my posting suddenly changed:

Solveig's Stats 1st quater 2016

In my previous stats post I said that I would be moaning about a client, who had not paid me, well be assured, I was finally paid in the beginning of the year, without any late fees, but I was paid.

Blog Performance from 1st of January 2016 to 31st of March 2016

Between the 1st of January 2016 and the 31st of March 2016 my blog received a total of 4268 views, which gives us an average of 1422,666666667 views per month.

But to the details…

In January, I had a total of 1893 views, so I was not all that far from the 2000 mark, just missed it by 107 views. There were 544 people who poked their noses into my blog. 25 posts were published in January, of which 0ne was a guest post for Discovering Traditions about Epiphany by Robin Rivera. (Guest posts: 4% of the month’s posts)
The 3 most popular posts in and also of the month were as follows: Learning to Twitter – Part 1 (140 views – 7,4% of the month’s views), Who am I? (101 views – 5,3% of the month’s views) and Great Blogging Events – Part 1: Weekly Events (83 views – 4,4%).
3 main referrals were: WP Reader (112), and then the Search Engines not far behind (104), and eventually Twitter (33).

In February, my views dropped, which is not much of a surprise when you look at my posting, and take into consideration that I cut back a lot on visiting other blogs. So my blog had a total of 955 views in February, by 357 visitors. I posted a mere 8 posts of which 2 were guest posts for Discovering Traditions. One about Karneval by Conny Kaufmann the other about Mardi Gras by Diana Gordon. (Guest posts 25% of the month’s posts)
The 3 most popular posts were Discovering Traditions: Mardi Gras by Diana Gordon (71 views – 7,4% of the month’s views), Learning About Compassion – #1000Speak (66 views – 6,9% of the month’s views), and Discovering Traditions: Karneval by Conny Kaufmann (54 views – 5,7% of the month’s views).
3 main referrals: Search Engines (112), WP Reader (35), and Twitter (18)

In mid March, I came back to blogging, after letting my readers know what was going on in the beginning of the month. I gradually started to visit other blogs as well, which has helped my views to grow again. In March, my blog had a total of 1420 views by a total of 597 visitors. I posted 13 posts, the first one announcing the loss of my mother, a post that became highly popular on the 7th and 9th of March, I do think that it was shared on Facebook, by a member of my family. Of those 13 posts was a guest post for Discovering Traditions, Gulara Vincent came back to my blog for the 3rd time (and definitely not the last, I hope) to share Novruz with my readers and myself, which is a Spring Festival from Azerbaijan. (Guest post 7,7% of the month’s posts)
The 3 most popular posts of March were: Breaking the Silence (296 views – 20,8% of the month’s views; I do think that this must be my most viewed post so far), Discovering Traditions: Novruz – Spring festival in Azerbaijan by Dr Gulara Vincent (74 views – 5,2% of the months views), Dear Blog (62 views – 4,4% of the month’s views).
3 main referrals: Facebook (186), Search Engines (116), WP Reader (80)

This is the first time that I looked in a bit more detail at the referrals. I have come to realise that suddenly Search Engines, mostly Google Search have started bringing me a good chunk of traffic every month. December of 2015 was actually the first time that I received significant traffic from them (86), in the months prior to that it never exceeded 35 referrals. Maybe it’s because I have suddenly turned into a SEO Goddess, or because I have so many posts that there is something to lead a searcher to, or maybe Google changed some things? Really, I have no idea, most of the time I cannot even see what the searches were.

I think the best thing to do for me at the moment blog wise is to continue being and eclectic and authentic blogger.

Work in the Beginning of 2016

At the beginning of 2016 I was still working only with a few clients, most of them established since a long time, which the truth be told is a good source of income when you are a freelance professional. I worked with/for 10 different clients, some were only for a few lessons, while others are there for a more serious long term. 4 of them are both clients and students, which in this case means they are adults. The rest are school students, meaning that my clients are the parents. I have probably had the best income since I started, at least since I started working again after my daughter’s birth.

I have come to realise that I massively enjoy working with adults, and I am planning on deepening my client portfolio, as I am now proposing skype German lessons, so wherever you are in the world I am ‘there’ to work your German with you! (I will be putting up a page for my German lessons in English very soon, for the moment there is already one in French).

Finally, I have started to think about the option of maybe crafting some online courses that I will record and then propose on teaching platforms. I am sure that I will be writing about that in more detail once the A to Z Challenge is over…

  1. Had to look just to see what you consider a ‘lack’ of blogging! I consider I’m doing well if I get a post out every week so please don’t beat yourself up! Your traffic analysis is really interesting but it is a shame there isn’t the background to things like google referrals so we can learn what works so well, but congratulations – seems amazing from where I’m sat!

    1. Hey Lisa, I am not beating myself up. I just went from many blogging days in a row to radio silence… Ok, November was NaNoPoblano, so the challenge was to blog every day, and in December I had 22 guest posts, which enabled me to keep such a good record.
I have seen some of the search terms that have come through, they are quite touching or funny, in January one was “timberland for him her and the little one”, not that I mentioned timberland anywhere on my blog. But 3 visible search terms per months are not worth mentioning…
      Thank you 🙂

  2. Ah, it’s really interesting to see this – I loooooove checking my own stats (possibly too much) so it’s fun to see someone else’s/your breakdown of that. I look forward to see where you end up going with the German lessons/online course as well; that’s something I’ve been thinking of offering (though in English) over the summer, but it’s just figuring out where to start that’s the thing…

    1. Hey Charlotte, everyone loves visiting them a bit too much I guess…
Do you know anyone looking for German lessons? One of my bi weekly students completely stopped German (he was doing a bilingual school) due to some personal problems so I am suddenly missing out on a big chunk of my income…
      Just start!

      1. I don’t know anyone right now (the vast majority of my German-speaking friends are in Austria with me and so not really looking for lessons), but when I find anyone, I’ll point them in your direction! 🙂 And yeah, I think I will!

  3. Solveig, I’m so sorry to hear about your Mum. I had wondered why you hadn’t blogged for so long and hoped things were okay. Obviously not. I’m thinking of you! Love and best wishes,

    1. Thank you Rowena. I did write about it a week after she died, I had received an email or two asking if everything was alright, that gave me the nudge to write about it, and it did help me with the pain. Then when I came back to blogging I mentioned it again. Writing is really helping me.
      Thank you for everything!

      1. You’re more than welcome. Writing helps me with just about everything, except housework! I wrote about Roald Dahl today and he seemed to write to cope with grief. It is a very long post but he went through so much. I chose him because he made me laugh and was supposed to be a counterbalance to the heaviness of some of the other poets but he went through so much. Yet, it’s very encouraging be he kept going and fought back. xx Ro

  4. I’m so sorry to read about your mum! Lost mine in 1997. So can understand… blogging daily would not be one of your top priorities at that time!
Please don’t be too hard upon yourself.
i love how you’ve collected all the stats and analyzed them in this post. I especially liked how you shared your monthly posting schedule from Nov to Mar, in the form of that graphics with the blue dots.
Hopped over from Shilpa Garg’s blog. Take care.

    1. Thank you Chicky.
I am not being too hard on myself, it might seem like it, but I am not.
In November I did participate in a challenge which consisted of posting every day, thus I developed a habit, which was massively helped by the lovely participation of 22 guests in December 🙂

  6. It seems to me it’s a constant push-pull in blogging, you can post a lot or visit a lot, but it’s hard to do both. I’m so happy my post was included in your round up. It turned out to be one of my favorite posts I’ve ever written. : )

    1. Naturally I was going to include your post in the roundup! I’ll have you back for another one if you want 🙂 I am glad to here that you enjoyed it that much!
I have no idea how to correctly organise my posting and visiting and worst of all at the moment, replying to comments…
