following the impulse

Yesterday, my daughter was asleep and S. was busy studying (= occupying the computer), something made me get up, make a whole lot of noise to extract my oil pastels from their hiding place.

I made myself confortable and let the colours flow onto the paper, I didn’t have a specific image in my head. I let my soul decide what to do. And it felt really good.

When I write, I like the words to flow, and from the feedback I have been getting recently, it seems to be a good way for me to go about it. So, yesterday, I did the same thing, just not with words, but with oil pastels. Now, I do hope that I’ll be doing more drawing and painting in the future (hey, it’s a great activity to let the mind wander, and it does not over heat the computer on hot days…)

I used to draw, paint, sculpt a lot in the past. With 15 things came to a sudden halt, as school was too demanding to concentrate on artistic activities. But now and again I dwelled in creativity. During my second year at university I did quite a bit of painting, I gave a spiderman painting to a friend, did some cute paintings of Calvin and Hobbes, and even did a “commissioned” piece. A friend of mine was in a band, and they were going to have a Tintin themed decoration at their concert, stupidly I sold my painting for 2 pounds…, but I still have a picture of it somewhere. You might know my painting of Wawel Castle. But for a few years I have been laying low, so that’s why I am happy that I didn’t think to much and just followed my heart yesterday.

When I was finished, I started to wonder, what does this drawing say about me? How would this be seen by a psychologist? Is it positive, negative, lively?

And then I had a bit of fun cropping the photo I took of my drawing. So these are all extracts of what you see above.

So what do you think? Do you like it? What stories do you see?

Do you sometimes sit down and let your heart and not your head decide? When you write, draw, paint, compose, create, do you like to shift the focus to an extract? How does that make you see your work?

  1. The last clip is rotated clockwise 90 degrees – I think the whole drawing should be – it makes more sense that way. I guess it is the western convention of having the main light source in the upper left.

The last few weeks I’ve been turning on all of my music equipment and just “jamming” – playing without any preplan and letting the music go where it wants. I won’t record any of the “noise”, but it is great fun.

    1. Thank you! And you are a good observer, I did turn the last clip.
I haven’t hung it on a wall yet, so I will try to look at it from different angles to see which one is best. It just seems strange doing a drawing upside down…
You should record some of it, and then cut it up and mix it back together, or something like that, who knows were that might lead you?

      1. A bit of modern rock Musique Concrete might be a good idea, but most of my jamming sounds more like a weird mixture of 70s funk and 80s techno pop, just played off the duff.

    1. Oh thanks, I had to look up Marimekko…
I am quite happy that it did not turn out too dark, but rich in colours and light 🙂

  2. I love the expressive nature of the pictures – the freedom in them. I love to draw, but I haven’t drawn in so long I’m itching to do something creative…other than writing of course! Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

  3. I love the colors, which look to me like a cloud, and the way the darker lines imply that there is something very concrete behind them, trying to peek out. 🙂

  4. I like the photos of the art–it could be its own collection: close-ups of canvases. The colors are so warm, bold, and lively. I think I need to do something like this, too; I’m getting all uptight in writing, art … life in general. Maybe I’ll draw with my kiddo this afternoon and see what comes of it. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. You should, and do some free writing. When we get uptight we stall…
So did you manage to draw with you kiddo?
I felt like sharing it once it was done, sometimes a little feedback can boost confidence. I was surprised that it was so rich in warm and lively colours. I suppose it is a positive sign. You have been an inspiring commenter and fellow blogger that you are definitely welcome!
